Dr. Murisiku (Muri) Raifu
Dr. Murisiku (Muri) Raifu, a Neurosurgeon at New York Hospital is as passionate about philanthropy as he is about his chosen profession. Born in Ghana to Nigerian parents, Dr. Raifu arrived in New York 3 years ago to practice his medical craft at which point he also began supporting sustainable philanthropic projects in various capacities.
Dr. Raifu gained independence at an early age, leaving home in Ghana at 15 years old to attend high school in Minneapolis on an International Student Scholarship. His determination to succeed, as well as his unwavering focus led him to complete a three year program in just two years.
Dr. Raifu was accepted to Amherst College in Massachusetts, where he excelled at sports and academics and graduated with honors. After graduation, Dr. Raifu lived and worked in New York for a year, an experience that he describes as unforgettable because of New York’s eclectic nature. He moved back to Minneapolis to attend medical school at the University of Minnesota, and was accepted into the Neurosurgery program at UCLA Medical Center, which he completed in 2008.
Knowing firsthand the challenges that people in the developing world face, Dr. Raifu has been able to utilize his success to support sustainable causes and help talented individuals. Dr. Raifu has been a financial contributor to various charitable organizations, and is largely involved in humanitarian causes.
Such events have included a fundraiser at his residence for Brotherhood/Sister Sol, an organization which sends underprivileged youth to Ghana as part of the organization’s International Study Project, and hosting Africa Unite for Haiti. Africa Unite for Haiti brings together the African Diaspora community, businesses involved with Africa, friends of Africa and well-wishers to benefit the Global Syndicate and support its Haiti project, in a show of solidarity between Africa and the Diaspora.
